Cultivating confident readers through the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
Cultivating confident readers through the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
The Orton Gillingham approach is an explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling do not come quickly to individuals, such as those with dyslexia.
Lessons involve all the major pathways of the brain: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (hence the THREE Corners of a triangle).
Concepts are taught in a logical and well-planned sequence. We don't follow a curriculum. As an OG practitioner, I create a prescriptive lesson plan every time I meet with your child.
Each lesson is crafted for your student and carefully builds upon the previous lesson. Students appreciate that there are no surprises and everything they practice should be known to them.
Constant and consistent review of previously learned material. A typical student needs 4-14 repetitions to learn a new foundational reading skill. A dyslexic individual needs 40-200 repetitions to lay the same neural pathway.
By carefully crafting each lesson for your child, the unique needs of your learner are met. We continue to work on concepts until mastery is reached.
Studies show that the English language is 86% predictable if one knows phonics rules and generalizations. I simplify this process for your student by focusing on letter combinations known as Phonograms.
Students are taught precisely what they need to know clearly and straightforwardly.
Hello! I'm Kelly King. I hold a Master's in Education and have been an educator for 12+ years. In 2023, I received my certification in Orton-Gillingham (C-OGRS-1).
All children can read if taught systematically. Reading is foundational to success in upper grades. Mastering literacy skills early will lead to later success. Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
I understand the complexities and hardship that come with having a struggling reader, as I have a child with dyslexia. I'm here to come alongside you and tell you there is HOPE!
I am wife to Kyle and mom to three distinctly different but equally amazing children. When not sitting on the sidelines at a field or court for my kids, I enjoy working out, traveling, volunteering at church, and reading my bible.

A standard session lasts for 55 minutes on "Koala Go", an interactive learning platform that is designed to keep learners engaged. Each lesson incorporates the principles of the OG Approach, which includes learning sounds, spelling sounds, reading words, spelling words, writing sentences, new material/handwriting/phonemic awareness, contextual reading, and finally a game! During the sessions, students are given tasks that they have already learned and are emotionally supported to ensure they feel successful.
A strong and fast internet connection is needed along with a laptop computer with a camera so that the screen can be tipped for me to see what the student is writing (preferred) OR A desktop computer with a document camera. The student MUST wear headphones with a microphone covering the ear. Google Chrome Browser is needed to support the "Koala Go" Learning Platform.
Sessions are $75 for 55 minutes; this includes a weekly email with updates on your child's progress and lesson planning time. I recommend at least two weekly sessions, typically with a day off between sessions. For an even more intense focus, three sessions a week are advantageous for heightened exposure and practice with reading and spelling, which promotes automaticity and greater retention. Payment is on a month-to-month basis, with payment via check or Venmo (@threecornersliteracy) due before the start of each new month.
Please sign up via the Initial Student Assessment form below, and I will be in touch to set up an initial assessment ($30) to see if your child would be a good fit and assess reading ability.
Many parents have a fear of online tutoring, and rightfully so. Distance learning over the COVID years did nothing to boost our confidence in this area. I'm here to tell you, THIS IS NOT THE SAME THING. This is 1:1 tutoring, fast-paced, interactive, and multi-sensory. Your child will be engaged for the entire 55 minutes. I have worked with students with ADHD, Auditory Processing, Dysgraphia, etc., all online and had much success. Many students and parents prefer it, as there isn't that dreaded transition time, car ride, or hour-long wait for the parent. You get to keep those precious minutes. Your child can hop online in their jammies from the comfort of their home. If you are hesitant, I'd say it's worth trying; you may be pleasantly surprised!

Tutoring with Mrs. King of Three Corners Literacy has truly been THE most amazing experience a parent could wish/pray for. Our incoming 4th grade daughter has never enjoyed reading. That is, until she met Mrs. King. ❤ Mrs. King built quick rapport and trust with our challenged reader, not an easy task after 2 foiled tutoring relationships in the past. Our daughter was a bit untrusting of yet another tutor her mom sought out and researched. 🤣 After connecting with Mrs. King ahead of my daughter meeting her, I KNEW we’d found the perfect tutor fit.
Mrs. King has an epic process of establishing the baseline where she should start with her students. Our little reader hopped right in on their first session and walked away with the biggest smile on her face, something I had NEVER seen with tutoring of the past. She learned AND she had fun doing so.
My husband and I take turns reading with our daughter. A few things we’ve been marveling at since working with Mrs. King: we no longer have to argue with her to read. She reads at her own will. We challenged her to read 3 chapter books this summer. She started book 7 this week with 3 weeks yet of summer. 😍 Our daughter’s confidence in reading has grown exponentially. She is able to read and tell the story back better than what she read because she is now understanding and retaining what she’s reading vs just looking at words on a page. I love to hear what she’s read by herself, with Mrs. King, or with my hubby because her story telling is that of the author of the series she’s reading (if not even a little more interesting 😊).
Our daughter is finally reading signs out loud when we are out and about. She now reads packages at the grocery store and other things kiddos who feel more confident with reading have been reading for years now. NONE of this would have been possible without the instruction, guidance, and encouragement from Mrs. King. Our daughter has SKYROCKETED this summer. We know none of this would have been possible without the magic of Mrs. King. ✨ Our daughter started the summer with tutoring for summer ONLY on the agenda. She is now as eager as we are to ensure we hold a time for tutoring during the school year as well. I can’t recommend Mrs. King with Three Corners Literacy enough. She WILL change the game for your reader, and family dynamic as well (no more tears over reading). 😉
Every student has unique support needs. Tell me more about what you hope a tutor can do for you, and I will reach out soon.
